Joseph: King of Dreams
YouTube |
A.k.a. The Prince of Egypt’s poor cousin.
Yep, like a typical poor cousin. |
In a sense, yes, this can be considered as the prequel to The Prince of Egypt, because the chapter on Joseph came before the chapter of Moses in the Book of Genesis. But I don’t think religious leaders would want to refer to biblical literature with the same terms used in referring to popular cinema.
They also wouldn't want any nudity. Sorry. |
Now we’ve got a few theories as to why The Prince of Egypt raked in millions at the box office yet Joseph: King of Dreams got a straight-to-video release. Here’s how it probably went down.
PRODUCER AND DREAMWORKS CO-OWNER JEFFREY KATZENBERG: I want to do another Bible story.
DREAMWORKS CO-OWNER STEVEN SPIELBERG: Sorry, Jeffrey. Too risky.
KATZENBERG: Too risky? The Prince of Egypt was a hit!
DREAMWORKS CO-OWNER DAVID GEFFEN: Yeah, but that doesn’t mean that a movie about Jesus wouldn’t bomb at the box office.
KATZENBERG: It’s not about Jesus. We’re doing Old Testament again.
SPIELBERG: Samson?
KATZENBERG: What? No. Genesis. Joseph the Dreamer.
GEFFEN: Will it be like the musical?
KATZENBERG: Not really. There’ll be songs, but that’s about it.
SPIELBERG: Okay. We’re giving you a quarter of the budget of The Prince of Egypt.
KATZENBERG: A quarter? But I’ve got Matt Damon down for the lead role!
GEFFEN: Scrap him. Get Ben Affleck. He’s also a quarter of Damon’s talent fee.
SPIELBERG: And as a favor to my friend George Lucas, can you give Mark Hamill a part here? His career could use a boost.
GEFFEN: Sorry. Not technicolor enough. |
