Review: Three Dangerous Life Lessons Monsters University Teaches Kids

DisneyPixar on YouTube

Monsters University is an excellent example of a good prequel or sequel. First, it doesn't appear forced (at least on the surface), and by "forced" I mean "made for the sake of box office returns". Second, it's a stand-alone film, which is what good sequels or prequels should be. It's possible to enjoy this film without having seen Monsters, Inc., and it gives a whole new level of meaning to those who have actually seen it.

I wish I watched Monsters, Inc. again before watching this.

What bothers me about Monsters University are the life lessons it imparts. Though these life lessons are directed more at the older viewers and would probably go unnoticed by the younger children, they nevertheless preach dangerous ideas, which these kids could rediscover once they hit puberty. These are:

"I know! I know!"

BIG NAME PLUS NATURAL TALENT EQUALS SPECIAL TREATMENT
Yes, the big hairy James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) is a natural scarer, and he doesn't even know the theories behind scaring. He just does it. And he carries the Sullivan name, which means he comes from good, scary stock.

What's his student number?

HARD WORK TRUMPS NATURAL TALENT
The hard worker here, of course, is the not-so-scary Mike Wazowski. A one-eyed green ball with the voice of Billy Crystal is actually more adorable than scary. But he works hard, and hard work alone can put him at the top of his class.

Not pictured: Tons of reading material and eyebags.

HARD WORK PLUS NATURAL TALENT TRUMPS EDUCATION
And this is the most disturbing part, because Mike and Sully, master scarers, do not actually graduate college. Chew on that, parents.

"Promise not to tell your folks, all right?"
